In the evening-length Awakening, violinists David Harrington and John Sherba, violist Hank Dutt, and cellist Jeffrey Zeigler perform a meditation on redemption inspired by the events of September 11, 2001. The title work Awakening is by Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky of Uzbekistan. The program, which includes music from a dozen countries, also features works by Argentineans Osvaldo Golijov and Gustavo Santaolalla, Americans Michael Gordon and Terry Riley, and Finlander Aulis Sallinen. The Nittany Valley Children's Choir performs with Kronos. Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company, founded in 1973 by ballet master Pavlo Virsky, embraces the charm, beauty, and folk dance traditions of its homeland and shares them with audiences in the four corners of the world. Clad in colorful clothing and blessed with grace, the company performs dances filled, in turn, with romance, optimism, humor, and occasional melancholy. Since 1980, choreographic ethnographer Myroslav Vantukh has served as artistic director of the company his mentor created. Under Vantukh's leadership, the company of eighty-five artists continues to create dances that enrich an already broad and deep repertoire. Founded in Washington, DC, in 1973, the African American female vocal group gets its name from Psalm 81:16, which speaks of a promise to be fed by honey out of a rock. The metaphor aptly describes the ensemble's repertoire steeped in the sacred music of the African American church, the clarion calls of the civil rights movement, and songs of the struggle for justice everywhere. The ensemble fashions its music from the sounds of the blues, spirituals, gospel, rap, reggae, African chants, hip-hop, and jazz. Sweet Honey's collective voice, sometimes accompanied by hand percussion instruments, produces soulful harmonies and intricate rhythms.
