The mission of the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research is to support a rigorous program of faculty and student research and creative accomplishment by enhancing the environment for scholarly and artistic endeavors, encouraging the highest standards of quality, and fostering ethical conduct in research.

As reflected in the Annual Report of Research Activity FY 2008 (PDF), Penn State's $717-million-a-year research program spans the University's many disciplines and is integrated into the academic environment at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

"Our faculty members are contributing new ideas and new technologies across a very wide spectrum of disciplines," notes Eva J. Pell, Senior Vice President for Research and Dean of The Graduate School. "This is the power of a major research university—creating an environment where people from many disciplines can work together to solve major problems."

Penn State faculty members and their students continue to "make original investigations and publish them to the world," says Pell—generating knowledge that serves both Pennsylvania and the nation, and helps in many ways to improve the quality of life for all Americans.
